Springfield Goals against Janesville (Credits to Nalkil Productions)

The Springfield Jr. Blues swept the two game weekend home series this past weekend as they defeated division-rival Janesville on both Friday and Saturday nights inside the Nelson Center.

The Jr. Blues were carried to a 5-3 win on Friday against the Jets behind two goals apiece from both James McGing and Nate Chasteen. Also, starting goalie Matt Leon had yet another impressive performance in between the pipes, and won his third straight start for the season.

On Saturday night, it was a different story. Following the Jets starting goalie Brock Kautz holding the Jr. Blues to no goals through the first 53-minutes of the game, they ended it with a bang. After trailing 1-to-0 following a Janesville goal mid way through the second, Brett Skibba tied the game up at one. With less than four minutes left in the game, following Skibba's goal, Mike Fazio scored two goals himself. He scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 16:30 mark, then followed it up with an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left--leading the Jr. Blues to the fifth win in their last six games.

Former Jr. Blue Nick Townes' continuing his feel-good story comeback

Following the heart-breaking tradgedy in which former Springfield Jr. Blues' forward Nick Townes went through this past off-season, he truly is a heart-warming story that could make anybody believers in the game that we all call life.

When the 20 year-old forward from Crown Point, Indiana was diagnosed with kidney failure during training camp entering his first season for the Janesville Jets, many people and fans in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) had doubts that he would ever strap up for a competitive hockey league game ever again.

Townes himself, though, thought and believed the exact opposite.

"The doctors said that they believe the failure of my kidneys was from dehydration," said Townes in a text message. "Right now things are good. I'm playing in the MNJHL to get everything back from what I lost while I was in the hospital. Right now though, I'm getting better and I just have to keep working my way through this."

Nick, who was one of the hometown favorites here in Springfield for his short stay when he was a Jr. Blue, was put in the hospital in his home state of Minnesota on August 25th after feeling discomfort during off-season work outs for the Jets. He stayed there until August 31st. During his recovery, he lost ten pounds and gave a big-time scare to everybody that has ever seen him perform on the ice or connected to the man himself.

While he only played here in Springfield for one season, Townes was ultimately a fan favorite and had many good memories during last seasons' deep run that ended in the playoffs following defeat to the Jr. Blues' ex division-rival, the St. Louis Bandits.

"The guys on the team last season were great," he said when asked what he missed the most about playing in Springfield. "It was just an awesome feeling. Everyone was so close and we were basically just like a big family."

"But I also miss the people inside the staff from the billets to the coaches. Also, the fans in the Springy are very loyal and dedicated fans! There are great people in the city of Springfield!"

Although the numbers didn't put him among the elite, Townes' was certainly known for his hard core hustle. He was a player that may not have scored much or gotten credit for assists, but he definentely attributed to many important moments. He scored three goals during his stay in Springfield over the span of twenty games and had 26 shot attempts total.

He is a graduate of Merrillville High from his home state of Indiana. As a man that started playing the sport of hockey at the age of four years old, it's hard to imagine him not out there on the ice. Following the tradgedy that occured and the rehab he has been going through, his ultimate goal is to get back into shape and out there on the ice even better than he was before.

"My goal right now is to continue getting my strength back and work my way back into Janesville with a starting job."

Townes is officially playing for the Maple Grove Energy in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MNJHL), and has appeared in four games. In the four games since his return to the sport, the forward has seven points. He has scored one goal on his only shot taken and has six assists. He has finished each of the four games with at least one point a night, as he had three assists in his first game, a goal scored in his second--and finished the past weekend with two assists on Friday night and one assist on Saturday night. His team is 3-1 so far and he is impressing everyone as he seemingly has improved with the puck in his possession, his overall strength, and is on the right path to achieving his exact goals in the sport at the moment.

His return to the game of hockey is not only a feel-good story around the sport, but also an inspiration to people all around the world that miracles can happen if you stay dedicated and work hard enough. Not only do you have Springfield behind you Nick, the entire world is cheering for you to continue your come back and achieve your dream!

A look ahead at the upcoming week in Jr. Blues hockey

The past weekend for the Springfield Jr. Blues inside the Nelson Center was most certainly one that head coach Tony Zaowski and his team won’t forget—in fact, it could be a weekend that gives them the fuel and momentum to make big things happen for the rest of the season.

Following two more huge wins against division-rival Janesville, team captain Mike Fazio and his Jr. Blues have now won five of their last six contests overall and have put themselves in a prime position to move up in the North division standings if in fact they can keep up their winning ways that they have been up to over the past couple of weeks.

The team defeated the Jets 5-to-3 on Friday night behind two goals apiece from both James McGing and Nate Chasteen—and not to mention another impressive performance from starting goaltender Matt Leon. Leon allowed three goals but behind some clutch goals from the teams’ offensive attack, he earned his third straight win between the pipes and his fourth overall for the season.

On Saturday night, when the team celebrated “Halloween Costume Night” with pre and post game festivities with the kids in attendance, it may have been the best performance yet from the team thus far this season. After trailing 1-0 throughout much of the game, Brett Skibba scored his team-leading eleventh goal to tie it up at the 13:10 mark of the final period; and Fazio capped it off with two goals of his own in the final three and a half minutes—leading the team to a 3-1 victory. Ryan Kellenberger started in net for the team and allowed just one goal on 22 Janesville shots, earning his second win of the season.

Even more impressive, despite the team going just 1-for-8 overall on the one-man advantage, the Jr. Blues defensive attack held Janesville scoreless through both nights as they went without one goal in eight power plays themselves.

With the team improving to 6-8-2 (14 points) following the two games, they are now just two points behind Janesville for sixth in the North and are on their way up as they hit the road for two games against the Johnstown Tomahawks (7-5-5, 19 points) next weekend starting on Saturday night.

Halloween Night at the Nelson Center a completely ultimate success

On Saturday night inside the Nelson Center, Mike Fazio and the Springfield Jr. Blues showed all of the faithful fans what the holiday is really all about—and if you were there, it certainly wasn’t a game that many, if any, will forget for a long time.

After Janesville tricked us into thinking they were going to shut Springfield out, the Jr. Blues treated the home crowd with a dramatically-impressive come from behind win with three goals in the final seven minutes and made the teams’ official “Halloween Night” a truly successful event.

Fazio, who is this seasons’ team captain, scored the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes remaining in regulation—then followed it up with an empty-net goal to seal the deal at 3-1 with less than 15 seconds to go. Brett Skibba tied the game at one apiece with just fewer than four minutes left after the team was scoreless and trailing 1-to-0 throughout much of the first 53-minutes of the game.

Before and after the game, fans and kids lined up for the official candy handout and had a special treat for the little kids that wore costumes to the game as it was the teams last home game inside the Nellie before the official holiday that will occur this up-coming Wednesday.

It was truly an amazing atmosphere inside the arena, especially in the final minutes of the game as the home crowd was a huge lift for momentum in the comeback. They had a costume contest at intermission and announced the top-ten winners, which can viewed on the left side-bar, as well as on a “Halloween Night” photo album that I have put together.

Thanks in large part to the blogs’ new official photographer, Samie Nichols, many photos have been uploaded and are set for everyone that was or wasn’t there at the game to view.

As this was first-year head coach Tony Zoaswki’s first “Halloween Night” of his career in Springfield, calling it an ultimate-success is saying the very least of all gestures. Saturday night’s win was a great all around fan experience for the kids, and an amazing game that was well worth the price of admission for all of the fans that attended.

The Jr. Blues won for the fifth time in their last six games and is starting to make a move in the standings in the North division. Overall on the season, the team is currently 6-8-2 (14 points) and will be heading on the road next weekend to take on the Johnstown Tomahawks before four straight home games back inside the Nellie starting again on Friday, November 9th.

If there are any photos that you would like uploaded to the album or that I happened to miss, please send them to my email at cobbtyler025@yahoo.com and I will upload them as soon as possible.

Fazio, Jr. Blues defeat Jets 3-1 with late game rally on Halloween night

(**Photo Credits go to Samie Nichols**)
In a game that the Springfield Jr. Blues were held scoreless throughout the first 53 minutes, the team rallied with three goals in the final seven minutes and defeated the Janesville Jets 3-1 inside the Nelson Center on Saturday night in a North American Hockey League regular season contest.

With the team trailing 1-0 at the 13:10 mark of the third period, Brett Skibba scored on assists coming from both Terry Leabo and Mike Fazio, adding on to his team-lead in the scoring department, and evened the score up at one apiece.

Three minutes later, with an overly excited amped up Springfield crowd, Fazio lit the Nellie up with a goal of his own to give the Jr. Blues a 2-1 lead with both Mitch Rogge and Brett Skibba assisting on the play.

Fans inside the Nelson Center were estatic, pumped, and with less than one minute remaining in the game, Fazio scored his second goal and finalized the score at 3-1 in Springfield's favor. On the teams night of celebrating Halloween, the team seemed to trick us by being shut out, then gave us a treat with an amazing, dramatic comeback.

Janesville got their lone goal off the stick of Zach Diamiantoni at the 6:10 mark of the second period, which at the time gave the Jets a 1-0 lead. Both Conor Lemirande and former Jr Blue note Ruslan Pedan assisted the shot off of his stick.

Tonight's goalies both performed well. Jr. Blues backup but starter tonight Ryan Kellenberger allowed just one goal for the second consecutive start as he did last weekend against Topeka in the teams 1-0 loss. Kellenberger successfully saved 21 of 22 shot attempts and earned his second victory of the season.

As for the Jets starter, Brock Kautz, he saved 38-of-40 Springfield shots but picked up his second straight loss.

The Jr. Blues out shot Janesville in every period on the night and overall by a total of 41-22. Both teams had three power plays each for the game, with Springfield going 1-for-3 and the Jets went 0-for-3 on the one-man advantage--making Springfield 1-for-8 on the weekend and Janesville 0-for-8.

Springfield improved to 6-8-2 (14 points) following the game while Janesville fell to 7-7-2 (16 points) overall on the season. The Jr. Blues have now won five of their last six games and will hit the road to take on Johnstown for two games on both Friday and Saturday nights next weekend.

Jr. Blues look to sweep weekend set against Janesville later tonight

The Springfield Jr. Blues are currently playing their best stretch of hockey yet in the early start of the 2012-2013 North American Hockey League regular season.

Following last nights five-to-three win, team captain Mike Fazio and the Jr. Blues look to sweep the two game weekend homestand against division-rival Janesville Jets and make it the fifth win in their last six contests.

After starting out the season 2-7-2, with four wins in five games, the team has improved to 5-8-2 and is now 5-5-1 overall at home. With a win later tonight, it would make it the first time so far this season that first-year head coach Tony Zoaswki and his Jr. Blues were above the. 500 mark at home.

Last nights win ended Janesvilles' three game win streak and was a welcome back party for the Jets head coach Joe Dibble, as well as both Nick Townes and Ruslan Pedan. All three were with the Jr. Blues last season.

Springfield got two goals apiece from both forwards' Nate Chasteen and James McGing. It was the first multi-goal game for both of them this season. In a 3-3 tie game with under four minutes in regulation, Chasteen scored as it proved to be the game winner. With fourteen seconds left, and an empty net for Janesville, McGing then added in his second goal and sealed the deal for the dramatic 5-3 victory.

Jr. Blues starting goalie Matt Leon has won three straight starts between the pipes. He followed up his shut-out performance on the road in Kansas against Topeka last week with 35 saves on 38 shot attempts last night, and before his shut-out, he defeated Port Huron inside the Nelson Center as he gave up three goals on 41 shots.

Back up goalie Ryan Kellenberger, who started last weekend in the 1-0 loss at Topeka, made 39-of-40 saves and certainly performed well enough to not deserve a loss.

The second and final meeting between the two teams this weekend will have the puck dropping at 7:05 pm tonight inside the Nelson Center.

Nate Chasteen scores twice, fuels Jr. Blues past Janesville 5-3

(**Photo Credits go to Samie Nichols**)
Nate Chasteen netted two goals, ultimately including the game-winner, and the Springfield Jr. Blues defeated their division-rival Janesville Jets 5-to-3 on Friday night inside the Nelson Center in a North American Hockey League regular season matchup.

In front of a riled up Springfield crowd, in a matchup in which both teams had previously been on a roll, the Jr. Blues won for the fourth time in their last five games. Meanwhile, for the visiting team, with the close loss, Janesville ended their overall win streak at three games.

The Jr. Blues started the game out scorching as they scored two goals in just the first five minutes following the opening faceoff to take a quick 2-to-0 lead. Chasteen scored the first goal just 3:24 into the game and was followed by teammate Ryan Atkinson less than one minute later.

Jason Ford, the Jets’ leading scorer so far this season, got Janesville on the scoreboard a few minutes later and made the score 2-1. Not too long following that goal, James McGing added another goal—giving the Jr. Blues a 3-to-1 lead with still over ten minutes left in the opening period.

The scoring in the first wasn’t over with though. On a night in which both teams went 0-for-5 and combined for 0-for-10 overall on the powerplay, with less than four minutes remaining, Alex Shuchuk scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal and made it 3-to-2 Springfield following the first twenty-minutes of hockey.

The second-period was a change of pace though, as only one goal was scored in the period—coming off of the stick of Janesville’s Jordan Himley. Himley scored the periods only goal at 13:15 on an assist from Mike Sullivan, evening up the score at three after two periods with just twenty minutes remaining in the contest.

Entering the third period, it was hard to tell exactly what team had the momentum on their side—but starting goaltender Matt Leon shut down the Jets’ offensive attack—saving all ten shots the Jets had fired at him. As neither team had scored throughout the first fifteen and a half minutes of the final period, Chasteen scored an unassisted goal to make it 4-to-3, which proved to be the game winner as McGing followed it and sealed the deal by scoring an empty netter with fourteen seconds remaining, making the final score 5-to-3—and giving both Chasteen and McGing two goals apiece for the game.
(**Photo Credits go to Samie Nichols**)

Springfield out shot the Jets 42-to-38 on the night, as Jr. Blues goalie Matt Leon saved 35-of-38 Janesville shots on the night, including twenty-two of their last twenty-three, helping him earn his fourth win in nine starts this season—and his third consecutive overall.

Janesville used their tandem of goalies between the pipes tonight though, as Brock Kautz started the game before Austin Priebe finished it off. In over fifty-five minutes, Kautz converted successfully stopped 35-of-37 Springfield shots—while Priebe allowed two goals as well, but on just four shots.

Following tonight’s game, with the win for Springfield, they improved their overall record to 5-8-2 (12 points) on the season while the visiting Jets fell to 7-6-2 (16 points) overall. Both teams will be back at it tomorrow night inside the Nelson Center for the second and final matchup of the weekend as the puck will drop at 7:05 pm.

Last Weekend Results (both teams)
Jr. Blues split two-game road series 1-1 against Roadrunners in Topeka.
Janesville is coming off a two-game sweep at home against Coulee Region.

Big Story of the Weekend Series inside the Nelson Center
As everybody involved inside the world of sports knows, head-to-head division-rival matchups could go either way. Both teams enter the two-game series opener on Friday night on a roll as the hometown Junior Blues have won three of their last four games, while the visiting Jets from Janesville, also have won three of their previous four games. Springfield swept Port Huron in their last two games at home before being shutout in the final game in Topeka last weekend 1-to-0 after they won the opener with a shutout themselves, 2-to-0 on Friday night. The Jets won both games last weekend but loss the opener on the road against Kalamazoo two weekends ago, 1-0.

Team Scope

Springfield Junior Blues-The hometown good guys from Springfield enter this series over the weekend with quite a bit of confidence as they have won three of the teams’ last four contests. Brett Skibba is a large part of the reason, as he currently leads the Junior Blues in points with fourteen and has scored five goals in the last four games—including a three-goal hat trick in the 5-3 win over Port Huron on October 12th.

The team is currently in seventh place out of eight teams in the North—but currently own a record of 3-4-1 overall at home and have recorded wins against some teams that not many people expected them to beat. Through fourteen games, Springfield has an overall plus-minus of minus seven (-7) as they have scored just thirty-two goals compared to thirty-nine goals allowed. Matt Leon, who is the expected start for the opener on Friday, is 3-3-2 in eight starts this season with one shutout. Ryan Kellenberger, who is currently listed as the back up, is 1-5-0 in six starts so far. The two have combined to allow thirty-seven goals on 451 shot attempts.

Janesville Jets-Somewhat like our hometown Junior Blues, this weekends’ opponent and Northern division-rival Janesville Jets started off the regular season slow—but thanks to a nice stretch of wins put together lately, also have themselves gaining some confidence . Entering this weekend’s games, Janesville has won three straight games and will be looking to extend it to four or ultimately five as they swept Coulee Region last weekend at home—with the opener ending in overtime.

The Jets are led from an offensive attack that features Jason Ford, Austin Vieth, and Connor Lemirande. Ford leads the team with eight goals and fourteen points—and most impressively, with the three forwards on the ice through fourteen games, the team is +15, which is among league leaders for three players combined throughout the entire NAHL forwards.
The goalies for the Jets have both been quite impressive as well—just as much as our two goaltenders. Brock Krautz, who is the teams number one option, is 5-3-1 in nine starts while back-up goalie Austin Priebe has started five games and has an overall record of 2-1-1. All four goalies that will be participating in the two game series clash this weekend own a save-percentage of .927, which in itself is very impressive.

Who is Hot (Both teams in last 5 games)
For the Junior Blues, success has been relying a lot upon how well both Nate Chasteen and Brett Skibba have played. Chasteen has tallied six points in his last five games while Skibba has added five himself. Skibba has scored five goals with no assists while Chasteen on the other hand, has six assists and no goals scored. Also hot for the good guys, between the pipes, is starting goalie Matt Leon. Leon is 2-0-0 in the teams’ last five games with his most previous start being a shut-out. He has allowed just three goals on sixty-six shot attempts fired.

As for Janesville, Connor Lemirande and Ruslan Pedan have both put up four points each. The two of them have combined to for eight points with both of them scoring two goals each—and two assists each. Starting goalie Austin Priebe has an overall record of 2-1-0 and allowed seven goals with 104 total saves (.937 saves percentage).

Special Teams Comparison (through fourteen games)
Springfield – PP: 18.2 % (9th in NAHL) – PK: 82.5 % (14th in NAHL)
Janesville – PP: 15.8 % (13th in NAHL) – PK: 84.1 % (11th in NAHL)
