Matt Leon, Jr. Blues shut out Topeka 2 to 0 (10/20)

Devin Mitchell had a good first impression on his new team, Matt Leon pitched a shut out between the pipes, and the seventh place Springfield Jr. Blues defeated the South division's first place Port Huron Fighting Falcons on Friday night in a regular season North American Hockey League contest.

During the first period, Springfield out shot the Fighting Falcons 12-to-3 overall, but even after many opportunistic scoring chances, both teams were scoreless after the first twenty minutes of action. The Jr. Blues scored their only two goals in the second period of the contest, with one of them occuring on the power play.

Mitchell, who made his Springfield debut following the trade with Austin involving Cody Dixon, scored the first goal of the game at 10:06 of the second period on the one-man advantage with assists coming from both Parker Johnson and Trevor Stone. Exactly four minutes later, Russell Johnson sent an unassisted slaphot to the back of the net to make it the eventual game-ending final score, 2-to-0.

It was an oddly-interesting game to say the very least. Port Huron out shot Springfield 29-to-24 overall on the night, but the Jr. Blues converted on one of four power plays compared to the Fighting Falcons' going 0-for-4 on the night.

Both goalies were impressive in the net, as Port Huron goalie' Sawyer Mackenzie allowed just two goals on twenty-four shots. As for the good guys goalie, Matt Leon, he survived a huge flourish from the Falcons in the third period as he saved all twenty shots on net. As he picked up his first shut out on the young season, Leon was successful on all 29 save attempts, and extended the teams overall win streak to three games.
When the Jr. Blues held a 2-0 lead throughout the third and final period on Saturday night, Leon turned into a brick wall as he saved all twenty-two Port Huron shots on net as his team was out shot in the period 22-to-4.

Overall on the season though, first year head coach Tony Zaoswki and his Jr. Blues are currently 4-7-2, and now have ten points. The team will play one more game in Topeka tomorrow night with the puck dropping once again at 7:05 pm.
