The
past weekend for the Springfield Jr. Blues inside the Nelson Center was most
certainly one that head coach Tony Zaowski and his team won’t forget—in fact,
it could be a weekend that gives them the fuel and momentum to make big things
happen for the rest of the season.
Following
two more huge wins against division-rival Janesville, team captain Mike Fazio
and his Jr. Blues have now won five of their last six contests overall and have
put themselves in a prime position to move up in the North division standings
if in fact they can keep up their winning ways that they have been up to over
the past couple of weeks.
The
team defeated the Jets 5-to-3 on Friday night behind two goals apiece from both
James McGing and Nate Chasteen—and not to mention another impressive
performance from starting goaltender Matt Leon. Leon allowed three goals but
behind some clutch goals from the teams’ offensive attack, he earned his third
straight win between the pipes and his fourth overall for the season.
On
Saturday night, when the team celebrated “Halloween Costume Night” with pre and
post game festivities with the kids in attendance, it may have been the best
performance yet from the team thus far this season. After trailing 1-0
throughout much of the game, Brett Skibba scored his team-leading eleventh goal
to tie it up at the 13:10 mark of the final period; and Fazio capped it off
with two goals of his own in the final three and a half minutes—leading the
team to a 3-1 victory. Ryan Kellenberger started in net for the team and
allowed just one goal on 22 Janesville shots, earning his second win of the
season.
Even
more impressive, despite the team going just 1-for-8 overall on the one-man
advantage, the Jr. Blues defensive attack held Janesville scoreless through
both nights as they went without one goal in eight power plays themselves.
With
the team improving to 6-8-2 (14 points) following the two games, they are now
just two points behind Janesville for sixth in the North and are on their way
up as they hit the road for two games against the Johnstown Tomahawks (7-5-5,
19 points) next weekend starting on Saturday night.
