Entering
a season in which many spectators had unknown expectations for the team due to
new ownership, coaching, and core players—following a viciously fast start
through the months of September and October, second-year forward Brett Skibba is
showing off his value to the city of Springfield.
Through
the first fourteen games into the 2012-2013 regular season, the nineteen year
old forward out of Verona, Wisconsin, has already set a career-high for a
single season in goals scored with ten—and as of right now, he happens to lead
the Junior Blues in that department by a pretty wide margin.
In
his first season with Springfield, Skibba played in fifty-seven games on the
year. While he didn’t see the ice as much night-in and night-out as he is right
now, he managed to finish the season with eleven assists, four goals, and a
total of seventeen points. Not bad for an eighteen year old in his first season
against this level of competition, ehh?
Well,
one season later, at the age of nineteen—as well as a premeire player on the
team, Skibba has already scored ten goals, assisted four more, and leads the
team in the points department with fourteen total. Last season Brett finished
at -11 on the ice for the season, but through fourteen games this season, he is
already at +3, and seemingly continues to get better and better each time out
on the ice for another shift.
While
the 5’11, 185 pound forward won’t intimidate many opponents by the looks,
Skibba is a kid with a lot of agility and has a lot of skills with the puck;
and that in itself will intimidate you more out on the ice over many other
abilities.
Following
the departures of some very talented kids that the Junior Blues helped move on
to D1 colleges such as Gabe Antoni, Kyle Cook, Joseph Pontasch and Chris Sitler—Skibba,
of all players, had to be anxiously awaiting for this opportunity to come his
way.
Now
that the opportunity has arrived, Skibba is flourishing in it and thriving like
no other. Last weekend when the team defeated the first-place Port Huron
Fighting Falcons in both games at home, he scored five total goals—which
included a hat-trick in the 5-3 on Friday, then followed up with two goals on
Saturday in the teams 4-2 win.
For
being the longest running franchise inside the North American Hockey League,
the Springfield Junior Blues new standard under new head coach Tony Zaowski
involves this team competing in every game all season long. Well, with the
effort and results from Skibba thus far, if he can continue to keep this up, this
team could make a lot of noise! As the ole’ famous saying goes though, only
time will tell.
One
thing is for sure though, Brett Skibba has officially arrived with no plans of
slowing down!
